Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a AU$20 billion (USD $13 billion) investment to expand its data centre infrastructure in Australia between 2025 and 2029. This represents the largest publicly disclosed tech investment in the nation’s history.
The investment includes substantial portions dedicated to AI, renewable energy, and cloud infrastructure. AWS plans to construct multiple data centres while building three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland to support these facilities.
AWS has already trained over 400,000 Australians in digital skills since 2017, and this investment will further its commitment to generative AI initiatives such as AWS AI Spring Australia and the AWS Generative AI Accelerator. The Australian Prime Minister hailed this move as a strong indicator of future economic and technological growth.
With growing demand from enterprises and government agencies for cloud and AI capabilities, AWS’s commitment is poised to significantly enhance Australia’s position in the Asia-Pacific tech ecosystem.
Additional Context
- The AWS investment aligns with Australia’s ambitions to become a regional AI and cloud infrastructure hub.
- It reveals strong public–private collaboration, as seen in AWS’s prior partnership to develop a sovereign “Top Secret Cloud” for the Department of Defence starting in 2025.
- The push toward green data centre operations emphasizes cloud resilience and sustainability goals.
